Blognot #2

I am not a good blogger. It seems like I just wrote the first post and it's been over a month. Thanks to 1 confirmed reader my bud Barry Heyman from the last post- ha. As I stated before, I am not really publicizing the fact that I am writing these posts so if you are actually reading this, please feel free to recommend this page for me to anyone you think who might like it. I can promise you that in the very near future i will be having more interesting stuff here besides my random BS... exclusive interviews, songs, video, etc.... Thanks.

Let's see... First of all, this was cool... I ended up flying out to SF two weeks ago last minute and hung out with Hollywood Undead who are going to be working with me on the Cakewalk front. These dudes are the truth and are killing it. I was not sure what to expect but man they are really great live and really good dudes. We had a blast and did a photo shoot on their tour bus. I doubt they will be reading this (I don't think anyone will read this:)) but thanks to: Hollywood Undead, David Boxenbaum, and their manager Jeff for being so cool and helping me put together this endorsement. The photos from the tour bus (with the v-studio 100) will be used in Guitar Player mag, Guitar World - etc. and are killer. Thanks to Ashton the photographer from 1crazynight who killed it.

What a week that was> flew to CA for HU mon morn>flew back wed at 6pm and went right into a meeting with Flyleaf's tour manager and FOH engineer who was in town for the night, and then Thursday was with Johnny Juice, Brian Hardgroove and Chuck D all day, AND THEN right into knee surgery the next morning at 6am... nice. I blew out my cartilage last June in the last hockey game of the season and have not had time to get it scoped. The good news is that my friend, team mate and Universal GM Mark Didia got me in with Dr. Feldman who does all the Ranger's knees (maybe this means I can try out for them next season - haaa). I have to say, I highly recommend surgery for anyone like me who cannot relax for 2 minutes. It forces you to chill for a week or so.... pretty cool.. I called it "Vication" (great name for a band btw).

On the creative front I was psyched to find out that a song I wrote with Dilana (Rockstar Supernova) made the record and it just came out. http://www.amazon.com/Falling-Apart-Explicit/dp/B002STF7R2

Also, a band I produced/mixed a year ago called Comic Book Heroes found their way onto the red carpet at the AMA’s. http://www.jsyk.com/2009/11/24/comic-book-heroes-open-up-about-their-weekend-at-the-amas/ . I am beginning to work with them in the next few weeks to finish the EP as they are just finishing a deal now with a new company. I’m really happy for these guys and I think they are going to go a long way in 2010.

Jacob Heal’s record comes out Tuesday so I am pretty psyched to have that out. It's actually the first official record on the label. I plan on signing at least two or three artists per year and getting more full records out on the label every year. It’s going to be a tough run for this record with the state of the industry but I think the record will find its way into the ears of fans who like One Republic, Daughtry, Three Doors Down, The Frey, etc. I have to admit that I am pretty fired up to be releasing music to the public again after a long time. I am starting to encompass the new music age of knowing the reality of low/no sales, but at the same time having the freedom to create something great from nothing. This was such a fun record to make because it was literally just Jacob and me. I mixed the record “in the box” for the most part and also utilized the new Cakewalk VS-700. The other thing that really glued the mixes and completed the record was a compressor on the mix bus custom made my John Ellis that Scott Riebling turned me onto. (Sorry I almost started geeking out there.) Mike Nappi played drums on the last three tracks and I was psyched to have him part of the record as his playing is ridiculous. Jacob Heal has quite a story and and quite a voice. He deserves to be heard for sure so I hope everyone who buys the record enjoys it.

PLEASE BUY THIS RECORD! My son Mack will thank you when he turns 18 and goes to college:) college:)

This Pokémon song I co-wrote/produced/mixed and played every instrument on found its way onto Youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELV8df2AaQQ Cori Yarckin and I pounded it out fast and did the track in less than 10 hours under the gun.

This last week was a blast because I got to go to some great industry parties and caught up with some great friends. I ended up at the A2IM party at Drom with my friend and owner of the kick-a$$ label System Recordings where we caught up with Jim Mahoney, Rich Bengloff and a bunch of other people. Barry Heyman (find him if you need a great ent lawyer http://www.heylaw.com / ) and my buddy Rob Schustack (I think this dude sleeps less than I do) from The Orchard were both there as well and it was a good hang. From there we went over to visit our friends at the Women In Music party and they always throw a great one. Last night I attended the ASCAP party at The Greenroom and what a great time that one was. I met my old buddy Matt Rafal there who works at Supreme Artists and is also an amazing songwriter, I was psyched to catch up with John Robert who is an artist I was looking at closely when I was at Capitol. This kid is the epitome of a modern day music pioneer and has pushed the indie envelop to the limit. I think all it’s going to take is the right backer and he will be in the mainstream spotlight shortly. I had a great conversation with another indie artist hat was there who I previously met at the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus nyc record release party a year ago. Today he hipped me to his newest track and vid and I have to say that I am pretty blown away http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFDumNKE7HI – his name is Mikey Wax and he is another example of this new wave of indie artists that are ridiculously talented. I will definitely be listening to this record and hopefully will be checking out a show of his soon. I ended up meeting with Sue Drew who is now at ASCAP and a bunch of other great friends where for a good few hours the room was filled with people who didn’t care about the lack of record sales.

Tomorrow night I will be hanging with Andrew W.K. who will be giving away a Cakewalk VS-100 from our limo at Time Square. After that we will be heading down to his nightclub Santos Party House which should be fun. Andrew is such an amazing artist and person and I am psyched to hang with him and his crew. For the rest of the week I will be up in Boston for 3 days and also working on the NAMM Show which is in Anaheim in January.

Thanks for reading and my sincerest wishes to you and yours for a Happy Holiday Season! Jrl

Blog launch

If you found this page – I sincerely welcome you. I'm not really a blogger. So... I am going to start writing some items here on this blog. I am not going to promote the blog at all (so feel free to "share" this page if you are reading this) and my intent is to offer some interesting and exclusive views in the music industry as I often find myself in some interesting places. If you are reading this I hope you enjoy it and I will be regularly posting interesting (or not) words and pictures whenever I have something to offer.

I have been in the music industry my whole life pretty much. I have held A&R/Marketing/Radio Promotion/Production positions at two major labels - Elektra and Virgin/Capitol. I was also signed once to a major label where my band was dropped faster than it was signed - so, I have pretty much seen all angles from every side of the industry. I am fortunate to still have a bunch of great friends (and business colleagues) who are the top level of the major labels and independent labels. I still consult for labels on different levels and this year I also programmed all the panels for the CMJ Music and Film Festival for the second year in a row (just ended).
At the beginning of the year, I thankfully took a job with a great company "Cakewalk by Roland" (a pretty big company) as Artist Relations Manager and that is my main focus now as well as developing this label. As you can tell, I don't sleep much; my motto now is "welcome to the NEW music industry where you will work 3 x as hard for 1/2 as much money".

Thanks for reading, Jimmy Landry
